Backgammon – 3 General Plans

In extraordinarily general terms, there are three fundamental tactics used. You need to be agile enough to hop between game plans quickly as the course of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This involves assembling a 6-deep wall of pieces, or at a minimum as thick as you can manage, to lock in your competitor’s pieces that are on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most adequate tactic at the begining of the game. You can build the wall anyplace inbetween your 11-point and your 2-point and then move it into your home board as the game advances.

The Blitz

This consists of closing your home board as quickly as as you can while keeping your opponent on the bar. e.g., if your competitor tosses an early two and moves one piece from your 1-point to your three-point and you then toss a 5-5, you can play 6/1 6/1 eight/three eight/three. Your competitor is now in serious calamity due to the fact that they have 2 pieces on the bar and you have locked half your inside board!

The Backgame

This course of action is where you have 2 or more anchors in your opponent’s inner board. (An anchor spot is a position occupied by at least two of your pieces.) It must be played when you are extremely behind as this action greatly improves your opportunities. The best areas for anchor spots are near your opponent’s smaller points and either on abutting points or with a single point in between. Timing is critical for an effectual backgame: after all, there’s no reason having two nice anchor spots and a complete wall in your own inner board if you are then forced to break apart this right away, while your opponent is shifting their checkers home, considering that you do not have any other extra pieces to move! In this case, it is better to have checkers on the bar so that you can preserve your position up till your opponent gives you an opportunity to hit, so it may be a great idea to try and get your challenger to get them in this case!
