In exceptionally general terms, there are three basic game plans used. You must be agile enough to hop between game plans almost instantly as the action of the match unfolds.
The Blockade
This is composed of building a 6-thick wall of checkers, or at least as deep as you are able to manage, to barricade in the competitor’s checkers that are on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most acceptable tactic at the start of the game. You can build the wall anyplace inbetween your 11-point and your 2-point and then move it into your home board as the game continues.
The Blitz
This consists of closing your home board as quickly as possible while keeping your challenger on the bar. For example, if your competitor rolls an early 2 and shifts one piece from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then toss a 5-5, you are able to play 6/1 six/one eight/three eight/three. Your opposer is then in serious dire straits because they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have locked half your inner board!
The Backgame
This tactic is where you have two or more anchors in your opponent’s home board. (An anchor is a position consisting of at a minimum two of your checkers.) It would be employed when you are significantly behind as it much improves your chances. The better areas for anchor spots are close to your competitor’s lower points and either on adjoining points or with a single point in between. Timing is integral for a competent backgame: at the end of the day, there’s no reason having 2 nice anchors and a solid wall in your own inner board if you are then required to dismantle this straight away, while your challenger is moving their pieces home, taking into account that you do not have any other extra checkers to move! In this situation, it’s more tolerable to have checkers on the bar so that you might preserve your position up till your opposer provides you an opportunity to hit, so it can be a wonderful idea to try and get your competitor to get them in this case!
