The Basics of Backgammon Tactics – Part One

The goal of a Backgammon match is to move your chips around the Backgammon board and get those pieces from the game board faster than your competitor who works just as hard to do the same buthowever they move in the opposite direction. Winning a match in Backgammon requires both tactics and good luck. Just how far you can move your pieces is left to the numbers from rolling a pair of dice, and how you move your chips are decided on by your overall playing tactics. Enthusiasts use different strategies in the different parts of a match dependent on your positions and opponent’s.

The Running Game Plan

The goal of the Running Game tactic is to lure all your checkers into your inside board and bear them off as fast as you can. This plan focuses on the speed of advancing your pieces with absolutely no efforts to hit or block your opponent’s checkers. The best scenario to employ this plan is when you think you might be able to move your own pieces a lot faster than your opposition does: when 1) you have a fewer chips on the game board; 2) all your pieces have past your competitor’s chips; or 3) your opposing player doesn’t employ the hitting or blocking strategy.

The Blocking Game Plan

The primary goal of the blocking strategy, by its title, is to stop the opponent’s checkers, temporarily, not worrying about shifting your pieces rapidly. After you’ve created the barrier for your opponent’s movement with a couple of chips, you can move your other chips quickly from the game board. You really should also have a clear plan when to withdraw and move the chips that you utilized for blocking. The game becomes interesting when the opponent uses the same blocking strategy.
